During power exercises such as sprinting, when the rate of demand for energy is high, lactate is produced faster than the ability of the tissues to remove it. As a result lactate concentration in the blood begins to rise.

By measuring the levels of lactate in the blood during periods of activity and inactivity sports scientists can determine optimum training programmes for athletes. Inefficient training exercises can be identified and increases in endurance, fat catabolism and a balanced heart rate can be achieved.
